ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Accelerated Reader (AR) is a proven, level-based program which helps students build reading mastery at their own individual levels by reading books that excite and motivate them. The program works by students reading a book, taking a quick computerized multiple-choice quiz and then receiving rewards for passing the test (80% correct) and for continuing to read.
All students, grades 2-5, have all ready taken the Star Reading Assessment as well as some in Kindergarten and First Grade (those reading books independently). This test evaluated each individual child's reading ability, and came up with what they call the "Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)" or "Reading Zone." Children choose books from the AR listing which are within their Reading Zone.
You may look at The AR Quiz List to check for titles on topics that are intriguing, yet both simple enough for each child's ability and challenging enough to enhance learning. Once the child has finished the book, he/she takes a computerized quiz. The quiz takes the place of book reports and other evaluation tools, assuring the teacher that the student has read the book. Questions on quizzes are literal questions on facts and events critical to understanding the story line. The test can be taken any time during the school day (with the teacher's permission), on any computer in the school. After successfully passing the test, they earn points. Points vary depending on the book's difficulty.
The importance of reading cannot be stressed enough. All school success and real life success is dependent on the ability to read well. Parents are integral part of the reading and learning process as well as being an important part of the Accelerated Reader Program. First ask your child or his/her teacher for your child's Reading Zone (ZPD). Your child then picks out a book from this list within his/her ZPD, retrieves it from the library and begins the reading journey.
